FAMILY FRIENDLY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY (Participants who are 18 and under are required to have a parent participate with them.) A scavenger hunt for all ages! Volunteers will meet with a representative from Bridges to Independence to briefly learn about the organization. Volunteers will then be invited to purchase a few items they would like to go into Welcome Kits that will be assembled for Bridges to Independence families. Volunteers will meet with a representative from Doorways to learn about the organization and the mission. Volunteers will then be invited to participate in an informational and service scavenger hunt off site. Please note: this activity will involve purchasing small items to total an estimated $25. After completing the scavenger hunt, participants will travel to the Doorways office to learn about the importance of each item they collected in serving the needs of Doorways clients in our community. Introduce your young ones to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service as we gather at the Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center to learn how to give back to our community and practice working together. Rotate through stations to hear a story about Dr. King, and play teambuilding games to discover the power of cooperation. Paint watercolor artworks to donate to a local senior home for our service project. The program runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and again from 11 a.m. to noon. The cost is $8 per person. Some of the activities will include tying no-sew blankets for sick/injured children at the Ronald McDonald House in Falls Church and no-sew scarves for the Bethany Women’s Center in Washington, D.C.; collecting and sorting food, diapers and other personal care items for distribution to pantries in Reston and Herndon; painting and decorating “Kindness Rocks” to distribute in the community; collecting, sorting and delivering children’s books to Title I schools in Fairfax County; and creating artwork and thank-you notes for first responders, teachers, veterans and injured soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
