  • MLK Service Project: Bridges to Independence

    FAMILY FRIENDLY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY (Participants who are 18 and under are required to have a parent participate with them.) A scavenger hunt for all ages! Volunteers will meet with a representative from Bridges to Independence to briefly learn about the organization. Volunteers will then be invited to purchase a few items they would like to go into Welcome Kits that will be assembled for Bridges to Independence families. After heading to a local store to buy the items (volunteers will decide how much they would like to contribute; no contribution will be too little or small!), volunteers will regather at Washington-Lee High School to assemble the Welcome Kits for Bridges to Independence.

  • MLK Service Project: Doorways

    FAMILY FRIENDLY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY (Participants who are 18 and under are required to have a parent participate with them.) A scavenger hunt for ages 12 & up! Volunteers will meet with a representative from Doorways to learn about the organization and the mission. Volunteers will then be invited to participate in an informational and service scavenger hunt off site. Please note: this activity will involve purchasing small items to total an estimated $25. After completing the scavenger hunt, participants will travel to the Doorways office to learn about the importance of each item they collected in serving the needs of Doorways clients in our community. They will also learn about ways they can be involved in the Doorways mission through numerous volunteer roles.

  • MLK Service Project: EcoAction Arlington

    FAMILY FRIENDLY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY (Participants who are 18 and under are required to have a parent participate with them.) Join fellow EcoAction Arlington volunteers and community members in cleaning trash and debris from Four Mile Run Stream, throughout Barcroft Park, and along Four Mile Run Drive. Help keep one of Arlington’s favorite neighborhood areas, and our largest stream watershed, trash free! Please dress for the weather (waterproof shoes if you plan to go into the stream) and bring a reusable water bottle.

  • MLK Volunteer Training: Youth Service America

    FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITY: YSA invites participants age 5 and up who would like to plan a service project using what they love to do! For example – soccer, cooking, music.
    YSA Sparks + Fire + ASAP model will be used to help you think about the issues you care about and effective strategies to make a difference and improve your community. (Participants who are 18 and under are required to have a parent participate with them.)

  • Reston Community Center MLK Day Event

    This year’s 35th Annual Reston Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration is full of opportunities for everyone. It is an inspiring three-day event that includes special performances by the Reston Community Orchestra, Liner Notes: Music of the Movement, community service projects, the Voices of Inspiration Program sponsored by the Reston Martin Luther King Jr. Church hosted by the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation and a Keynote Speech by Bakari Sellers followed by a community luncheon.

  • MLK Service and Learning Day at Frying Pan Farm Park

    Introduce your young ones to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service as we gather at the Frying Pan Farm Park Visitor Center to learn how to give back to our community and practice working together. Rotate through stations to hear a story about Dr. King, and play teambuilding games to discover the power of cooperation. Paint watercolor artworks to donate to a local senior home for our service project. The program runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and again from 11 a.m. to noon. The cost is $8 per person.   • Racial Reconciliation in Church and Community

    Join Floris United Methodist Church for an MLK Day of Service event putting together bags of necessities for homeless people and hygiene kits for a local charity. Good for people of all ages, children welcome and encouraged.
